Rosewood (1997). The 1922 massacre of black citizens in Rosewood, Florida, by a white mob from a nearby town.

My Family (1995). Traces over three generations of a Latino immigrant family’s trials, tribulations, tragedies and triumphs in Los Angeles.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006). The battle of Iwo Jima seen through the eyes of the Japanese soldiers.

Birth of a Nation (1915). Civil War-era saga in which abolitionists are seen as the destructive force and the Ku Klux Klan are the heroes.

Lakota Woman (1994). The 1960s are the setting for cultural sensitizing and protests that lead to a standoff with government forces.

Who Killed Vincent Chin (1987). One autoworker blames the competitive Japanese automakers for the threats to his job, and he kills a Chinese autoworker in the mistaken belief that he is a Japanese American.

Kite Runner (2007). An Afghani boy struggles with complex family dynamics and his own cowardice and deception, f lees the Soviet invasion, and eventually makes a life unexpected phone call that leads him on a journey of surprising revelation and redemption.

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). A white lawyer in the Depression-era South defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge. The story line also attends to the segregated town’s reactions, the lawyer’s relationship with his children and prejudice against a mentally disabled neighbor.

Grapes of Wrath (1940). Based on the John Steinbeck novel in which a Depressionera Oklahoma family faces failure during the dust bowl and leaves for California, where hardships continue. The plot involves bank foreclosures, landowners suppressing labor wages and three generations of the family struggling to survive.

Extraordinary Measures (2010). A family seeks medical treatment for their children’s rare disease. Competitive scientific research, diverse personalities, corporate and personal finances, relationships with other families, and the threatening timeline contribute to this drama.

Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story (1996). Dorothy Day does not appear to be a “saint,” but her personal pilgrimage and the social realities of Depression-era New York ignite a passion that create controversy for the church about how faith is to be lived.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001, 2002, 2003). J. R. R. Tolkien’s story of a dangerous quest to destroy a powerful ring, including diverse participants (hobbits, humans, elves, dwarves), evil forces and reflections on power, goodness, individual meaning and the fate of the world.

The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980). A native discovers a Coke bottle and brings it back to his people, where it increasingly provokes conf lict until he decides to return it to the god he believes sent it, resulting in an encounter with Western civilization, including a clumsy biologist and a despotic revolutionary.

Babette’s Feast (1987). A French woman refugee enters the household of a pastor and his two adult daughters in an isolated Danish village with austere nineteenth-century Puritan values. After serving for many years as maid and cook, circumstances occasion an amazing culinary surprise and an equally shocking revelation, with villagewide impact.

Gran Torino (2008). Disgruntled Korean War vet and recent widower Walt Kowalski grouses about Hmong immigrants next door, but is drawn into family feasts and the complex and dangerous environment of the teenagers.

Joy Luck Club (1993). Through a series of f lashbacks, four young Chinese women, born in America, and their respective mothers, born in feudal China, explore their past, helping them understand their difficult mother-daughter relationships.

The Matrix (1999). A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality, where humans believe they are free but are really slaves to sentient computers and their software, and he is challenged by prophecies concerning his own destiny.

Thunderheart (1992). Based on events in the 1970s; an FBI agent with Sioux ancestry is sent to a South Dakota Indian reservation to help solve a murder. Even as he tries to avoid owning his heritage, he slowly enters tribal relationships and worldview, eventually learning of government participation in a cover-up.

Long Walk Home (1990). An African American maid working for a white family, despite being well-treated, decides to walk to work as part of the bus boycotts in 1955-1956 Alabama, causing lateness and exhaustion, and forcing not only herself but her white “Misses” to face and respond to the times.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). A single, thirty-year-old Greek American woman, looking for more in life than her father’s family restaurant in Chicago, falls in love with a non-Greek man and struggles to get her family and her fiancé to accept each other, while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity.

Quinceañera (2006). Magdalena, anxiously awaiting her fifteenth birthday until she discovers she is pregnant, is abandoned by both her own family and her baby’s father, but finds a new family and new life.

A Great Wall (1986). When a Chinese American computer programmer is passed over for a promotion because he is Chinese, he quits and takes his family to mainland China, precipitating a clash of cultures.

Monsoon Wedding (2001). In India, where telecommunications and a Western lifestyle mix with old traditions, young Aditi accepts an arranged marriage with a groom living in Texas. Scattered relatives from both families come to New Delhi during the monsoon season to attend the wedding.

The Visitor (2008). When a widowed and disillusioned college professor is sent to a conference in New York, he is surprised to find that a young couple, having been scammed, is residing in his New York apartment. An unlikely friendship develops with the Syrian man and Sengalese woman as they face problems concerning justice and immigration documents.

Real Women Have Curves (2002). A first-generation Mexican American teen in a predominately Latino community of East Los Angeles receives a full scholarship to Columbia University, provoking a conf lict as she ref lects on the solidarity her mother has with work colleagues.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). In a mythic tale set in ancient China, two great Zen warriors in pursuit of a stolen sword and a notorious fugitive find themselves intertwined in the life of an impetuous, physically skilled but deeply troubled teenage nobleman’s daughter.

El Norte (1983). Mayan Indian manual laborers escape a Guatemalan army massacre and decide to f lee to the United States, struggling to make a new life as young, uneducated, illegal immigrants.

Smoke Signals (1998). A young Native American man sets out with another young man from the reservation to collect the pickup truck and ashes of his deceased father, and discovers his memories of his father are very different than his companion’s.

Dances with Wolves (1990). Lieutenant John Dunbar, sent to a remote Civil War outpost, befriends wolves and Sioux Indians, and gradually sheds his “white man’s” ways, then is tested as the Army advances into the plains and upon what has now become his family.

Born in East LA (1987). A Mexican American caught up in an immigration raid is wrongly deported as an illegal immigrant, with no way of proving he is an American citizen, and is forced to sneak his way back home.

Bread and Roses (2000). Two Latina sisters working as janitors, one of whom is an illegal immigrant, are set on a collision course that mirrors the conf lict between workers and management when they are caught up in a fight for the right to unionize.

Gandhi (1982). Biography of Mohandas Gandhi, the famed leader of the fight for Indian independence from the British through nonviolent protest.

Stand and Deliver (1988). A dedicated inner-city math teacher inspires his dropout-prone students to learn algebra and calculus using unconventional methods, and they do so well that they are accused of cheating.
